School milk consumption and allowance
In 2008/2009 the subvention amounts 386,234 t milk in 26 member states. The allowance of the European Commission was 74.687 Mio. Euros. The three best countries are Poland (14.06 Mio. Euros), France (13.53 Mio. Euros), Sweden (9.03 Mio. Euros) and United Kingdom (8.21 Mio. Euros). Germany has the fifth place (7,17 Mio. Euros).

Provision of school milk in Germany
Subsidised milk is no longer provided at all schools in Germany. The sale of school milk has fallen by more than 70 percent since 1993. We can assume, however, that, due to the complicated administrative procedure which stands in the way of subsidisation, non-subsidised milk and dairy products is being consumed at German schools.

School milk has a good image
In their national survey on school milk, Prof Hannes Weindlmaier and Dr Tamara Fallscheer of the Technical University of Munich were able to prove that school milk had a favourable image. The majority of the 1,860 pupils interviewed said they were well-informed on the value of milk for their health, characterising milk as "natural", "healthy", "athletic" and "refreshing". School milk suppliers struggle in the face of insufficient cost coverage
While milk may have a good image, the survey illustrated that the majority of registered suppliers of school milk are struggling with the fact that their services are not being sufficiently compensated, despite EU subsidisation. Why is school milk so important?
Almost half of Germany's approx. 12 million school-going children and adolescents leave home without a proper breakfast, and 10 percent do not breakfast at all. So the morning break at school plays a particularly important role for these youngsters.
